Before you enroll in any type of program or certificate program, you need to check and see if the online college is accredited. A certificate from any program looks good on your resume, but only when it comes from an accredited school. Employers will look in to a school’s background and see if they are accredited in a program before they hire you. What accreditation means is that a program meets certain standards within a specific industry in order to provide the best education to the students in that industry.
How is an Online College Accredited
An online programs have to go through the same testing and the same criteria as any other type of school does. Certain curriculum needs to be taught, the teachers need to have a certain level of education and the standards of the professionals in that department need to be at a certain level. The accreditation process can take months to get through, as there is a lot of paperwork to fill out for everyone involved.
Accreditation needs to happen every few years to keep a program certified. Accreditation can also be lost, if certain standards are not met within a program. The standards aren’t lowered for an online college accredited process. No matter where and how the course is taught, it needs to meet and maintain these levels for all of the people in the program.
Does an Online College Being Accredited Matter
Depending on the program you are taking, it will most certainly matter. Employers who want to hire the best possible employee for their business want to know someone has been taught the best standards and principles for their discipline. If they have applicants from two different colleges, one being from accredited online programs, they will probably choose that applicant first simply because of their school’s standing. It doesn’t mean anything against your education or your grades, it is simply a reflection of the standards that an online college accredited program carries with it.
When you are looking at the different college programs you can take, check in to their accredited process. If it isn’t listed in the website or on the materials you have received from the school, then ask someone who would know. Does the registrar’s office have a page describing their programs and who is accredited? As them or someone else on the college staff who can answer your question.
Registering for a college without accredited online programs doesn’t make sense since there are so many who do offer excellent ones with accreditation. Go with the school that works best for you and that has a flexible program to meet your needs. An online college accredited program will make even more sense since your hiring ability will also be increased.
