How do You Know if Online College and Universities are Accredited?

When you have decided that attending online college and universities is a smart plan for you, how do you go about finding which ones are accredited and in which programs? Not every school gets every program accredited, so you have to be a little smart when it comes to investigating the school and seeing if it is right for you. While it might be an excellent and top choice for a different student in another program, it might not make the most sense for you in your program. Get the facts and see if the program you want meets national standards before you go any farther and spend time and money with a school.

Ask for Credentials at Online College and Universities

The best way to tell if a program is accredited is to ask someone. Whether it is a professor at the online college you hope to attend or if it is the registrar, they should know the answer to your question. Accreditation only comes to programs who meet certain requirements by the board in that field. They have to have the professors tested, the program tested and they have to meet those standards of excellence for a certain time before they can advertise they are accredited. Not every program wil be accredited, since the process is tedious and even expensive to do.

Accredation also has to be renewed every few years in order to make sure it is still up to certain standards. So when you see that online college and universities are advertising they have an accredited program, you can rest assured that it is current and their program is up to date on national standards. People in any online college will be taught to these standards with a program.

Many online universities only advertise their programs when they receive the accredation. However, don’t assume they have it just because you saw an ad somewhere. Ask the department head, the dean of students or even an official in the admissions office if the program you are investigating is accredited and what year it went through last. If they don’t have an answer, then they need to find one for you. If they still can’t come up with an answer, that might mean no and you should move on to a different school to get your education.

Not every program you might want to take will be able to be accredited through online universities. There are programs that require internships, clinical experience or even lab work that just can’t be offered through an online college. If you really want to get an online education, you might need to change your program of study in order to study at online college and universities.
