But the college in the top spot didn’t even come close to making your top ten pick when you were thinking about registering with an online college. Is it different now than when you looked before? Should you re-investigate the school and see if there is something you missed? Now might be the right time to register for their online programs, but what makes it different now?
There might not be anything different now. The criteria to evaluate the online college might be what propelled it to the top of the list and nothing more. Online college rankings are based on the reviewer’s list of certain standards, not necessarily by what you need in online programs in order to satisfy your career goals or even your scheduling goals. You can look at the list, but compare it with your own needs before you register or rethink your online college choice.
Compare the Online College Rankings to Your Goals
Are you looking at online programs that offer a bachelor’s degree in a certain program, but the one at the top of this list only offers a certificate? Even though it sits at the top spot for other reasons doesn’t mean it will be right for you. Sure, it might be the best choice for someone else, but not you if a four year degree is your goal.
Does the program meet all of your needs? For example, do they offer ways to attend labs sessions, hands on clinical experience or even internships if you need them? A lot of online programs will be limited in what they can offer you for specific programs, so choose which one you plan to attend carefully. They may have an excellent staff who will work with local businesses and companies to get you the internship or hands on training you need.
Make Your Own Criteria and Evaluate
The criteria of someone else probably won’t mean anything to you when you are looking at an online college. While they may be looking at affordability, you might only care about financing the program 100% and seeing what grants and scholarships are available. DO they have a financial aid consultant to talk to even? Affordability doesn’t matter if you don’t have the means to come up with tuition in the first place.
Are you seeking a flexible schedule to work around your full time job? Then it won’t matter if they have state of the art webcasts delivered through the web if you have to sit in on them during the day hours. Online college rankings need to make the most sense for you and not someone else, so choose what fits you and not the author of the list.
